My autobiography makers mark

My Autobiography is the fascinating "life story" of the world's premier bourbon brand, Maker's Mark. From its proud but humble beginnings in Happy Hollow, Kentucky, the brand has grown to near cult status around the world, avidly sought after by spirits connoisseurs who crave its smooth, complex, and unique taste, and who appreciate the master craftsmanship of a product made the old-fashioned way -- by hand.

Readers are taken on a guided tour of Maker's Mark's pristine, old-fashioned Kentucky distillery, where bourbon is still made by hand. The book also describes what bourbon is, how it is made, what differentiates excellent bourbon from average bourbon, and why Maker's Mark has become the premium bourbon of choice internationally. It also looks back at the brand's advertising history, and highlights the truly hilarious and offbeat approach that Bill Samuels, Jr., who is the author of this book as well as the colorful marketing genius who ran the company from 1975 until 2011, took in order to reach new customers.

Maker's Mark: My Autobiography

May 22, 2018
This is a handsome, fun, and full-on folksy coffee table book retelling the history of Maker's Mark in particular, and bourbon in general. Written by the current owner of the family business, it is admittedly self-serving but it nonetheless remains an enjoyable addition to my food, wine, and spirits literary collection.

Any number of my noble bourbon boozers will enjoy it.

Of particular interest is the last third of the book, which is dedicated to reproductions of Maker's Mark ads. Maker's Mark has one of, if not the, most memorable and entertaining brands in the spirits world, so its a kick to see a lot of the ads in one place. Even more surprisingly, apparently some ad men accused Bill of having a lousy ad brand. They were probably all jealous hacks who wanted to dip their beaks in some of that sweet sweet bourbon bank.

Fortunately for us, Bill paid them no mind.

I have known Bill Samuels, Jr. for over twenty years. I have always respected him for being what I consider a generous “World Ambassador for Bourbon”. I have never heard him say anything negative about other brands or distilleries. He is free with his wealth of knowledge about everything Bourbon. He is also very entertaining to listen to, even if some of the stories are a bit of an exaggeration, there is always an element of truth to them that Bill wants the listener to remember.

This book is classic Bill Samuels. It is full of humor and fun stories, but at the same time there are many important truths about Maker’s Mark and the Bourbon industry as a whole. I would highly recommend this book to anyone new to Bourbon. They will enjoy the read and at the same time, learn the Bourbon basics. Maker’s Mark: My Autobiography, by Bill Samuels, Jr. Louisville, Ky.: Saber Publishing, 2000, Introduction, Photograph Credits, Illustrated, Pp. 116.

This book is pure Bill Samuels. It is very sharp looking. It is amusing. It does a lot to promote Maker’s Mark. It is a p
