Alanis Nadine Morissette (ə-LAN-iss MORR-iss-ET; born June 1, 1974) is a Canadian and American[9] singer, songwriter, and musician. Alanis Nadine Morissette was born on June 1, 1974 in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada to her parents Georgia Mary Ann Feuerstein and Alan Richard Morissette, along with her twin brother Wade. Wade is 12 minutes older than her and they also have an older brother, Chad. Her mother is Hungarian and her father is French and Irish. Because her parents were military school teachers, the family moved to Lahr, Germany from 1977-1980. When they returned to Ottawa, Alanis began playing the piano at age six; the next year, she began taking dance lessons as well as composing her own music, writing her very first song when she was nine. She attended Holy Family Catholic School and Immaculata High School before graduating from Glebe Collegiate Institute.

While at Glebe, Alanis appeared in five episodes on the Nickelodeon television show “You Can’t Do That On Television” her junior year. She used her earnings to record her first single. Alanis is one of three children in the family (she has an older brother named Chad and a twin brother named Wade). Although the name Alanis is Greek itself, Alanis Morissette has no Greek background whatsoever. As it turns out, Alan Morissette wanted his daughter to have a female version of his name, but he wasn't particularly fond of the name Alanna.
