Joseph Lawrence Kuharich (April 14, 1917 – January 25, 1981) was an American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at the University of San Francisco from 1948 to 1951, and at Notre Dame from 1959 to 1962, compiling a career college football record of 42–37. Kuharich was also the head coach of the Chicago Cardinals in 1952, the Washington Redskins from 1954 to 1958, and the Philadelphia Eagles from 1964 to 1968, achieving a career coaching record of 58–81–3 in the National Football League (NFL).
Kuharich played football as a guard at Notre Dame from 1935 to 1937 and with the Chicago Cardinals in 1940, 1941, and 1945. Kuharich died on the day the Eagles lost their first Super Bowl appearance in Super Bowl XV to the Oakland Raiders.

Career Summary
Joe Kuharich was a football coach in the National Football League (NFL) from 1946 to 1968, finishing his career as the head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. Over his twelve years of coaching his teams compiled a cumulative win/loss record of 63-86-4. During his career he was a head coach for eleven seasons, first with the Chicago Cardinals. He led the Cardinals for one season, compiling a record of 4-8-0. His next head coaching stint was with the Washington Redskins from 1954 to 1958, as he led the team to a 26-32-2 record. His third head coach placement began in 1964 with the Philadelphia Eagles. He coached them for five seasons and the team had a 28-41-1 record during his tenure. During his entire head coaching career, his three teams combined for a record of 58-81-3 across eleven seasons.

Kuharich played professional football with the Chicago Cardinals from
1940-1941. He served in the Navy for the next four years and in 1946 became
line coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers. He moved on to become line coach
at the University of San Francisco in 1947, then became the head coach
of the Chicago Cardinals. In 1953 he scouted for various clubs. From 1954-58
he served as the head coach of the Washington Redskins, earning pro coach
of the year honors in [apos]55. After his four-year stint at Notre Dame, from
1958-1962, Kuharich became supervisor of officials for the National Football
League. From 1964-1969 he was head coach and general manager of the Philadelphia
Eagles.
