Powers Allen Boothe[1] (June 1, 1948 – May 14, 2017) was an American actor known for his commanding character actor roles on film and television. He received a Primetime Emmy Award and nominations for two Screen Actors Guild Awards.
He won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie for his portrayal of Jim Jones in Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones (1980). He also played saloon owner Cy Tolliver on Deadwood from 2004 to 2006, President Noah Daniels on 24 in 2007, and Lamar Wyatt in Nashville from 2012 to 2014. He also appeared in the limited series Hatfields & McCoys (2012).
He is also known for his performances as "Curly Bill" Brocius in the westernTombstone (1993) and Alexander Haig in historical drama Nixon (1995). Other notable film roles include Southern Comfort (1981), Red Dawn (1984), Blue Sky (1994), Sudden Death (1995), Frailty (2001), and Sin City (2005).

Incisive, gravelly-voiced screen tough guy Powers Boothe was born on June 1, 1948 in Snyder, Texas, a sharecropper's son. Used to hard physical work "chopping cotton" as a youngster, he went on to become the first member of his family to attend university. He then proceeded to study acting via a fellowship with Southern Methodist University and graduated with a degree in Fine Arts. His performing career began in repertory with the Oregon Shakespeare Festival.
In 1974, Boothe arrived in New York after theatrical stints in Connecticut and Philadelphia. It took another five years before he made his breakthrough on Broadway as a swaggering Texas cowboy in James McLure's comedy play "Lone Star". His Emmy-winning performance as Reverend Jim Jones in the miniseries Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones (1980) led to a permanent move to Los Angeles. His known roles include his Emmy-winning portrayal of Jim Jones in Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones and his turns as TV detective Philip Marlowe in the 1980s, Cy Tolliver on Deadwood, "Curly Bill" Brocious in Tombstone, Gideon Malick in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Vice-President and President Noah Daniels on 24, Lamar Wyatt in Nashville, and the voice of Gorilla Grodd in the DC Animated Universe.
Boothe died in his sleep on the morning of May 14, 2017 from cardiopulmonary arrest caused by pancreatic cancer in Los Angeles, California, aged 68.[1][2][3]
