Daniel G. McCollum
Summary:
Capt McCollum was born on December 6, 1973, in Tallahassee, Florida. He spent his early childhood in Beaufort, SC, and later moved to Columbia, SC.
Capt McCollum was commissioned in January of 1997 through the PLC program. In April 1997, he reported to Quantico, VA, for The Basic School. Upon graduation from TBS, he reported to flight training at NAS Pensacola, FL, followed by advanced flight training at Corpus Christi, TX. He earned his wings in July of 1999. His next duty station was VMGRT-253 at MCAS Cherry Point, NC. Here he began his initial training in the KC-130. He then reported to VMGR-352 where he completed his RP training and was designated a T3P. Capt McCollum worked as an adjutant and was the first officer in VMGR-352 to become a martial arts instructor. Capt McCollum accumulated over 500 flight hours and flew in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
He was part of the Irmo wrestling team (runner up state champion). He was also part of the Clemson Wrestling Team (walk-on)

Daniel G. McCollum
On January 9, 2002, United States Marine Corps Captain Daniel G. McCollum was killed in an aircraft accident during a mission for Operation Enduring Freedom.
McCollum was born in Tallahassee, Florida to a mother who was a high school math teacher and a father who was a marine biologist. He was raised in Beaufort, South Carolina with an older brother. He moved to Columbia, South Carolina with his mother, brother, and stepfather when he was nine. His childhood was a beautiful one, full of adventures and lots of outdoor activities. McCollum loved all things, particularly if they involved the outdoors or water. He earned his black belt in karate and earned the rank of Eagle Scout.
Inspired by Marines at Parris Island, McCollum decided to join the USMC during college in 1995. Above all, he loved flying for the Marine Corps and his ultimate goal was to have a career as a naval aviator. He also tossed around the idea of one day working for Homeland Security. A Long Overdue Biography
Every good story should have a memorable beginning. Something that catches the reader’s attention and imagination. Perhaps in this case, the best beginning would be the ending and the best words to use would be the words of someone else. In 1840 then Secretary of War of the United States, J.R. Poinsett, signed a certificate, which stated:
“I certify that in conformity with the law of the United States of the 7th June 1832, Daniel McCollum of the state of Georgia, who was a private in the revolution, is entitled to receive twenty six dollars and sixty six cents per annum during his natural life, commencing on the 4th of March 1831, and payable semi-annually on the 4th of March and 4th of September in every year.
