Ned Yost Biography
Born and raised in Eureka, California, Ned Yost has made the transition many in the Majors have come to follow: become a catcher-turned manager.
Selected 7th overall by the New York Mets in the secondary phase of the June 1974 draft, Yost caught six seasons behind-the-plate as a backup catcher, taking his experiences to the Brewers (1980-83), Rangers (1984), and Expos (1985), totaling career averages of .212 with 15 doubles, four triples, 16 home runs, 64 RBI, and 54 runs in 219 games played.
Shorty after his retirement in 1987, Ned joined the Braves organization, spending 12 seasons on the managerial staff of the Atlanta Braves from 1991-2002 (winning the division in each of Yost’s seasons on staff). Due to the team’s sustained success, including a World Series Title in 1995, Ned earned his first stint as a skipper for the Milwaukee Brewers on October 29, 2002, succeeding Jerry Royster. The Brewers went on to make the playoffs in 2008. His first chapter at managing a major league ballclub ended with a win-loss record of 457-502.
