PT Usha Records: The Legendary former Indian Sprinter PT Usha is set to become the first woman President of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). She emerged as the lone candidate for the top post in IOA for the elections that are scheduled to be held on December 10, 2022. With this achievement, she will be the first Olympian and the first international medallist to head the association in its 95-year-old history.
Earlier on July 6, 2022, the Government of India had nominated the celebrated athlete PT Usha to the Rajya Sabha. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated her via Twitter and highlighted her accomplishments in sports. He also noted that her work to mentor budding athletes over the last few years is also equally commendable.

Usha) needs no introduction. Since 1979, P.T. Usha, has been associated with Indian athletics.
The sporting legend of India, the symbol of perseverance in Indian sports has been through several trials and tribulations in life. She was born as the daughter of E.P.M. Paithal and T.V. Lakshmi in the Kerala village of Koothali near Perambra in Kozhikode district. She was brought up in” Thrikottur” in Thikkodi panchayath and later on habituated in Payyoli one kilometer away. She was afflicted by ill health in her early childhood. Right from her primary school days Usha showed the spark of athletic talent and was the star of many a sports meet.

The ‘Payyoli Express’ hit the limelight as a junior athlete in the National Inter-State Meet at Kollam, Kerala, in 1978. However, her international debut in the 1980 Moscow Olympics proved lacklustre. In the 1982 New Delhi Asiad, Usha bagged a silver medal in the 100m and the 200m, but at the Asian Track and Field Championship in Kuwait a year later, Usha bagged the gold in the 400m with a new Asian record. From 1983-89, Usha notched up 13 gold medals at ATF Meets (later rechristened as Asian Championship).
Heartbreak in LA
At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Usha finished first in the semi-finals of the 400m hurdles, but narrowly missed a medal in the finals, reminiscent of Milkha Singh’s 1960 close brush with the podium. There was a nail-biting photo finish for the third place. Usha lost the bronze by 1/100th of a second. She became the first Indian woman (and the fifth Indian) to reach the final of an Olympic event by winning her 400m hurdles semi-final.
