Damir Markovina

Damir Markovina was born in 1973. in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. He graduated at MA of Film and TV Directing (Documentary film) at Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb, Croatia in 2022, after his degree in Acting, also at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb, Croatia. He has performed as an actor in many Croatian films and television series. He is a film director, producer, and a writer.
His short documentary film "The Shift" was selected in 25th Sarajevo Film Festival Official selection - Student competition 2019. His mid-lenght documentary film "Wait for Me" won the AJB DOC festival Sarajevo 2021, Main Award at Pula Film Festival in student documentary film competition, and the Oktavijan - Croatian national FIPRESCI award for best national short documentary.
His second mid-lenght documentary film "Deserters" won Best Central and East European film award and Best sound design award at Ji.hlava IDFF 2022.

DAMIR MARKOVINA was born in 1973. in Belgrade, Yugoslavia (now Serbia) and came up in Mostar (now in Bosnia and Herzegovina). He graduated Acting at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb, Croatia. He has performed in many Croatian films and television series and is a member of the ensemble of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb. He wrote the short feature film “Rom Com”, (4film, Zagreb, 2011., dir. Z. Rumboldt) that was selected for “Focus on the world” program of the Montreal film festival in 2012. His stage plays “Turkey trap” and “Mongrels” were both produced as radio dramas for the Croatian Radio, and for the latter he received the Croatian national award “Marin Držić” for best new drama in 2016. He is one of the producers of the critically acclaimed and internationally awarded film “You carry me” (4film, 2015., dir. I. Juka), the first regional project (ex-YU) distributed via Netflix. He is currently attending MA of Documentary Film (Film and TV Directing) at Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb, Croatia.

The Fighter

THE FIGHTER is a film about the final sum of a moral life and repercussions of consistent political choices on one’s family, safety and social position.
The author’s father Roko Markovina is living his retirement days restoring old boats on an island. From this point in his life we go back in time and revisit Roko’s role in politics during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina where he relentlessly advocated for peace and against nationalism. He survived several assassinations attempts and his whole family had to leave the country as both war and political refugees. Through archive materials we find out about his political activity and position. Through the newly filmed material we understand what the consequences of his activity are on him and the life path his family members were thrown in and if there are any regrets on his part.
