Michael "Sky" Chamberlain, began his life "on the road". He was born in the small Canadian village of Bella Coola, British Columbia. His family's early nomadic lifestyle took him all over the Western half of North America and Mexico. After reaching school-age, he and his family eventually settled down in the small coastal town of Grand Haven, Michigan. Upon graduating high school, Sky decidedly followed in his father's nomadic footsteps; donning a backpack and hitching his way across America and over to California. Not long after, he found himself living on a beach in Hawaii. The experience marked him deeply. After returning home he attended college and pursued an interest in Theatre and Film. In 1999 after a brief internship on the set of 'Chasing Sleep' he began working as a Grip and Electrician for motion picture and television. In 2001 he joined the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees -officially sealing his fate and helping to pave the road forward.

Michael Chamberlain is an oil painter living just south of San Francisco. Inspired by the California Impressionists and the plein air landscapes of Edward Hopper, he began painting in 2003. He started with a few basic supplies and a large stack of library books. “My first painting took four days to complete, it was a real struggle. Painting was more difficult than I thought, but once I started I couldn’t stop”.

Hundreds of paintings later he now attempts to finish a piece in a single session. “I found I was much happier with the result when I worked quickly and spontaneously. There seems to be an energy and vitality that was missing when I was too careful”. He found painting on location encouraged this approach. For many years he only painted outdoors, learning to capture the essence of a subject simply and directly.

Both in the studio and on location, he searches for beauty in the commonplace. “I find endless inspiration in simple, everyday objects and scenes. Painting has helped me slow down and look more carefully at the world around us”.

Michael Chamberlain says that if Vincent Van Gogh were alive today, he would be a vlogger on YouTube. Van Gogh was a prolific letter writer to an audience of one - his brother Theo. However, as a vlogger on YouTube van Gogh’s message would likely reach hundreds of thousands of fans. As a 21st century California-based impressionist, Michael inspires an audience on YouTube of well over 160,000 subscribers. In his videos, he tries to show the mistakes he makes. He candidly admits that none of the paintings in his videos are gallery ready. Upon returning to his home studio, he tenaciously works out whatever problems they may have until they are ready to hang in a gallery.

You know that old adage, “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?” Michael says it isn’t true! He says an old dog has more time and experiences that can make us better students of painting. The key to learning is coming to grips with the rate of failure. Failure is a necessary part of the process. When first starting out learning to paint it’s all too easy to believe in the myth of the genius.
