ROGERS, ALBERT BOWMAN, civil engineer; b. 28 May 1829 at Orleans, Mass., son of Zoar Rogers and Phebe S. Kenrich; m. first in 1857 Sarah Lawton (d. 1858) of New York; m. secondly Nellie Brush of Iowa; d. 4 May 1889 at Waterville, Minn.
As a young man, Albert Bowman Rogers was apprenticed to a ship’s carpenter but made one sea voyage only. He entered the engineering faculty at Brown University in 1851 and after transferring to Yale the next year obtained his bachelor’s degree in 1853. Following graduation he was employed as an engineer on the Erie Canal, before moving to Iowa and then to Minnesota. In 1862 he was commissioned major in the United States cavalry by the governor of Minnesota, Alexander Ramsey, during the uprising of the Dakota Sioux. The year before, he had joined the engineering staff of the Chicago, Milwaukee and St Paul Railroad, where he earned the nickname “The Railway Pathfinder” for his location work. Ab Rogers is a London-based designer known for a wide-ranging practice informed by his unique imagination. He founded Ab Rogers Design (ARD), in 2004 and it has since become an established studio specializing in the design of small spaces and for experiential design projects that are dynamic and rigorous, enriched with colour and narrative, while providing a high level of functionality and subtlety in design.
A former cabinet maker and sailor, Ab Rogers obtained a Masters Degree from the Royal College of Art in 1996. Over the last two decades his work has focused on a diverse range of conceptual approaches to the interior from the liberation wasted and forgotten space and making use of dynamic, flexible materials to the use of sensation and movement to explore how spaces and people adapt to one another.
Kitchen Rogers Design (founded with Shona Kitchen in 1998) sought to animate objects that are normally static and to bring life to spaces that are frequently lifeless. Major commissions included the Comme des Garçons store on rue du Faubourg St Honoré i

In this lecture, Ab will discuss the potential of light weight, versatile interventions, and re-purposing of existing architecture to minimise waste and maximise impact, ensuring our cities can respond to our changing needs.
The talk will consider the role of public realm as an external opportunity for transformation of behaviour through placement of provocative objects, exploring the value of using what can be found. Ab will look at examples of dry fix systems and object-based solutions like those utilised in the Japanese artist studio ‘The Fishmarket’, and use of local materials in projects like Thai festival ‘Wonderfruit’, exploring their ability to repurpose and reinvent a space without the need for costly demolition and construction, and will consider how collaboration with local makers, craftsmen and factories can equally reduce energy an
