Election to the Bass Fishing Hall of Fame seems to have sparked a resurgence in Tommy Biffle's competitive career.

Biffle, who turned 64 just a couple of weeks before his HOF election was announced in February, has been on a nice roll since then. After placing among the Top 30 just three times in his first 21 outings since the inception of the MLF Bass Pro Tour in 2019, he's now logged consecutive finishes in the 20s in the last two regular-season events.

Always a man of few words, his own summation of his turnaround was anything but complex.

"It's probably just that the places we've been to have suited my style of fishing," he said. "I'm not fishing any different than I always have.

"I'm thinking I'm going to catch them again (this week) at Lake of the Ozarks."

Long Run not in the Cards

Ozarks is a venue that Biffle says he's always liked, but he hasn't competed there in perhaps 25 years. In past events under the five-fish limit format, his strategy was to make a long run (an hour or more) u

Today’s historical photo, Biffle’s Patented Pitching Technique, dates back to 1987 and features Tommy Biffle, who had recently pulled off a double win on his local Oklahoma waters.  First, he won the Sport Bass Association Pro Division Tournament title at Lake Eufaula, OK on Saturday with just over 20 pounds of bass.  Immediately after that win, he called his wife Sharon and had her meet him for a Sport Bass Association Couples Division meet the following day, which they also won with a 24-pound sack of bass.  He found his fish shallow among the shoreline willows, getting a jig to them with what the paper stated was “his patented pitching technique.” Total weekend winnings came to $1,755.00.

At the time, Biffle was considered a likely 1987 Bassmaster Classic qualifier.  He indeed ended up qualifying for and fishing the first of his 19 Classics at the Ohio River out of Louisville, Kentucky later that year. In total, he fished 354 Bassmaster events, winning 7 times.  In addition, he fished numerous FLW events, as well as a host of local circuits and organizations
