Disability Rights Activist Darius Weems Loses Battle with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
— -- Darius Weems, the inspiring rapper and dynamic disability rights advocate who suffered from Duchene muscular dystrophy, died Sunday afternoon of DMD-related complications, according to a statement put out by his organization. He was 27.
Weems is credited with raising awareness of DMD, a rare genetic disorder that results in the disintegration of muscle tissue. Over time, the disorder is debilitating. Legs and arms are seized, and eventually, so are the muscles that surround the heart. In the United States, the majority of people afflicted with this disease die by age 25. His brother Mario died of DMD at the age of 19 in 1991.
“Shock. Grief. Helplessness. Those are the emotions we’re feeling -- emotions that all members of the DMD community feel too often and know too well,” reads the statement. “Joy. Camaraderie. Love. Those are the emotions he would want us to feel -- emotions that he embodied in his lifelong fight against DMD, and that he spread through countless individuals

Hey y'all! My name is Darius Weems. I was born and raised in Athens, GA. I was born with DMD (Duchenne muscular dystrophy), the number one genetic killer of children in the world. I am currently 19 years old. I am the star of a documentary called Darius Goes West. It is about me never leaving my hometown of Athens, GA. My friends and I decided to take a cross country road trip to try and get my wheelchair pimped on MTV's Pimp My Ride. We documented our travels as well as wheelchair accessibility around the U.S. We had an amazing time. Now we are traveling around trying to sell a million copies of the DVD to raise 17 million dollars for research for my disease (DMD). We are traveling basically non-stop in order to find a cure or treatment for my disease. Other than Darius Goes West, I am really into my music. I am currently trying to launch my rap career. I think I can really bring a different perspective to the rap game and spitting verses is a great way for me to get away from reality.
Darius's bio is coming soon
We’re working on updating the info for all of our Fellows

HONOREE Darius Weems
DARIUS WEEMS
2008 YOUTH AWARD
Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
United States
In 2008, Darius Weems was a 19-year old with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a fatal disease that took the life of his brother, Mario, and is the number one genetic killer of children worldwide. Despite the fact that his muscles have almost fully deteriorated Darius has spent the last 3 years traveling the country, raising awareness and money to find a cure for DMD.
Never before having left his hometown, Darius and 11 friends rented a wheelchair accessible RV in 2005 for a road trip to Los Angeles to raise awareness as they traveled all across the nation. The journey was filmed and released as Darius Goes West: The Roll of His Life. The film has won 25 awards worldwide, 20 of which are Audience Choice Awards, and raised more than $1 million for DMD research.
Darius donated his World of Children grant funds to Charley’s Fund (www.charleysfund.org), an organization dedicated to finding a cure.
