The fame of Downie seems to increase by the day and is about to go into overdrive due to his work appearing on national tv. His work has just featured on the BBC's popular Flog It programme (aired 3rd Oct. 11). The part on him starts about 32 mins into the programme and goes onto the end.
If you have never seen the series the premise is this:
Flog It is an established successful BBC series where members of the public bring their antiques to be viewed and valued by a team of experts. They are then given the option, with the help of experts, to sell their items at an auction. On each show, valuations are carried out by two experts and sometimes by presenter Paul Martin himself.

JAMES DOWNIE was born in Manchester in 1949 and went to school in the South of the City before working in the building industry for many years. But his interest in Art started very early on, strongly influenced by the buildings and people of Manchester and the paintings in the local art galleries that he visited frequently. One particularly strong influence has been the work of famed Manchester artist LS L*wry and in many ways Downie can be seen as the true successor to him in the genre of Northern industrial art. Downie started to paint full time in 1989 and since then has produced a steady flow of wonderful images of the Manchester region as it was in the 1950s and 1960s. He is a keen cyclist and frequently cycles around the area taking photographs to be used later as inspiration for future paintings. James Downie now has an ever increasing number of admirers who appreciate his imaginative, quirky and appealing artistic style. This has manifested itself in a rapid increase in the demand for an JAMES DOWNIE James Downie of the parish of Fola,Haddington County, Scotland, contracted to work as a labourer under McKenzie, April 12, 1852. He and his wife Margaret and three children aged 9, 8 years and 6 months immigrated to Victoria on the Norman Morison, arriving January 16, 1853.1 Following the move from temporary quarters at Fort Victoria to Craigflower, discontent was rife amongst McKenzie's employees. Melrose noted that many men were "stricken work" - or refused to work; for this they could be imprisoned for up to a month. James Downie was no exception and by May 27, 1853 had also "stricken work."2 However, Downie was not sent up to the bastion as were Deans and Anderson; he resumed work in June. On June 17th he, as had others at Craigflower, received a cow. (Unfortunately, It was shot ten days later by an Indian.)3 Melrose's diary indicates that Downie was a spirited man who enjoyed a drink and who was also a raconteur.
