Eartha Kitt
(1927-2008)
Who Was Eartha Kitt?
Eartha Kitt became popular in Paris as a nightclub singer, then returned to the United States to appear in films and on Broadway. Her 1953 recording of "Santa Baby" is still a favorite today. In the 1960s, Kitt had a recurring role as Catwoman on TV's Batman, but her career waned after she criticized the Vietnam War during a luncheon with Lady Bird Johnson.
Early Life
Born in North, South Carolina, famed singer and actress Eartha Kitt had a difficult childhood. Her mother abandoned her, and she was left in the care of relatives who mistreated her. Kitt was often teased and picked on because of her mixed-race heritage — her father was white, and her mother was African American and Cherokee.
Around the age of 8, Kitt moved to New York City to live with an aunt. There, she eventually enrolled in the New York School of Performing Arts. Around the age of 16, Kitt won a scholarship to study with Katherine Dunham, and later joined Dunham's dance troupe. She toured with the group for several years before going solo. In Par

An out-of-wedlock child, Eartha Kitt was born in the cotton fields of South Carolina. Kitt's mother was a sharecropper of African-American and Cherokee Native American descent. Her father's identity is unknown. Given away by her mother, she arrived in Harlem at age nine. At 15, she quit high school to work in a Brooklyn factory. As a teenager, Kitt lived in friends' homes and in the subways. However, by the 1950s, she had sung and danced her way out of poverty and into the spotlight: performing with the Katherine Dunham Dance Troupe on a European tour, soloing at a Paris nightclub and becoming the toast of the Continent. Orson Welles called her "the most exciting girl in the world". She also spoke out on hard issues. She took over the role of Catwoman for the third and final season of the television series Batman (1966), replacing Julie Newmar. Eartha Kitt died of colon cancer in her home in Weston, Connecticut, on Christmas Day 2008.

Eartha Kitt's Empowering Performance as Catwoman Turned a Short-Lived Role Into a Lasting Legacy
ABC's live-action Batman was a campy, vibrant hippie haven. Boasting charismatic leads and mod décor crafted in acidic greens, playful pinks, and rich purples, the TV series starring Adam West and Burt Ward brought comic book lore to life for a new, broader audience in stylish '60s fashion. Its legacy lives on as a fun and faithful adaptation of Bruce Wayne's often retold story. However, the show is also defined by its dynamic enclave of unforgettable villains, including Eartha Kitt's cunning and irresistible Catwoman. Though she only appeared in five episodes, Kitt, who died in 2008, remains one of the show's most recognizable figures to this day.
Joining Batman's third and final season in 1967, the actress stepped in for the incomparable Julie Newmar, who inhabited the role for two seasons before departing to pursue other opportunities. Nevertheless, Kitt embodied the character as though it was written specifically for her, charming the show's titular hero -- and audien
