Robat Arwyn

Over the years he has been commissioned by the National Eisteddfod, the Urdd, Radio Cymru and the Young Farmers Movement, as well as the London Welsh Male Voice Choir, Bois y Castell, Côr Seiriol and many other choirs.

Atgof o'r Sêr was the commission piece for the Denbighshire National Eisteddfod in 2001 which was written for Bryn Terfel, Fflur Wyn and Côr Rhuthun. During the Eryri National Eisteddfod in 2005 Er Hwylio'r Haul was performed by Bryn Terfel, Mari Wyn Williams and the Eisteddfod's Youth Choir. The first performance of his new work, Hwn yw fy Mrawd will be performed in the National Eisteddfod in Cardiff this year. The work is a biopic depicting the life of actor and singer, Paul Robeson and his strong links with Wales. Once again, Syr Bryn Terfel takes the lead role.

His latest commissions include Hanes creu popeth yn y byd (Story of the creation of everything in the world!), words by Mererid Hopwood. Work commissioned by the North Wales Music Festival for Côr Rhuthun, Côr Cytga

Born in Talysarn, in the Nantlle Valley, he was educated at Talysarn Primary School and Ysgol Dyffryn Nantlle, Penygroes. He has a degree in Music from Cardiff University and a Diploma in Librarianship from Aberystwyth. A member of the successful and well known choir, Côr Rhuthun a’r Cylch since 1981, and an accompanist and composer for the choir since 1987, he was appointed conductor of the choir in 2007. Now retired, Arwyn is busy composing and adjudicating at various Eisteddfodau. He also presents a programme of music on Radio Cymru on Sunday morning. He is married to Mari, and have two children.

He wrote Memory of Stars (Atgof o’r Sêr) for the National Eisteddfod in 2001, and Benedictus (from Er Hwylio’r Haul) for the National Eisteddfod 2005 which was recorded originally by Bryn Terfel and Rhys Meirion and was later included by The Priests on their classical album in 2008. This reached No. 1 in Ireland and Norway, Belgium and Sweden as well as holding the No. 1 position in the USA for 23 weeks.

Morfydd Vaughan Evans was born in Pentrecelyn near Rhuthun. After leaving school she went to work at the Ministry of Agriculture in Rhuthun and remained there until her retirement. On her marriage to Penri she moved to Rhuthun, where she worked tirelessly giving piano and singing lessons to a great many children from the area for over fifty years. But perhaps her greatest work was founding Côr Ieuenctid Rhuthun (Rhuthun Youth Choir) in 1981. The choir went from strength to strength under her leadership, competing in 'eisteddfodau' (competitive singing events) throughout Wales as well as in music festivals abroad, and taking part in hundreds of concerts.

Very sadly, we lost Morfydd in October 2007 and, to quote from Iwan Vaughan Evans' tribute at Morfydd's memorial service:
