5 Questions with Alan Levinovitz, author of The Gluten Lie

Alan Levinovitz might seem like an unlikely author of a book about nutritional science especially one that is being called a source of fresh insights on how to communicate the benefits of GE foods. Levinovitz, after all, is a professor of Chinese philosophy and religion at James Madison University.

But in his new book, The Gluten Lie, the classical Chinese scholar presents a powerful expos of how pseudo-scientific arguments have been used to promote diets throughout human history, from the grain-free diets of ancient China to the Paleo and gluten-free crazes of today. Levinovitz s deep dive into the world of nutritional science and 2000-year tour through dietary history also helps answer a burning question for science communicators and policymakers: Why do people from ancient China to today keep believing in food fears and fads that aren t supported by the scientific consensus? The USDA has approved a genetically modified potato created by Simplot — an Idaho company that Daily Show correspondent Aasif Mandvi has had hairy run-ins with before. Because of that history, and because Big Agribusinesses like Monsanto are the bad guy so often, Mandvi started out his report on GMO potatoes talking sympathetically with Jeffrey Smith at the Institute for Responsible Technology, who calls GMOs one of the most dangerous food additives mankind has ever developed.

But then Mandvi interviews Walter DeJong, a potato scientist at Cornell University. And it turns out most scientists think GMOs are safe, and sometimes even beneficial. It gets worse for GMO opponents — many of whom probably watch The Daily Show. My small quibble: Why didn't they call David Suzuki? —Peter Weber

Aasif Mandvi is a Peabody award winning actor, writer, creator, comedian, author and producer. Widely known for his work as a correspondent on the multi Emmy-winning, THE DAILY SHOW WITH JON STEWART, Mandvi is currently starring in two television series and is host to a podcast. He currently stars in the hit CBS series EVIL created by Robert and Michelle King, which will premiere for season 2 on Paramount Plus June 20, 2021. He has a recurring role on the UK series THIS WAY UP with Aisling Bea which is available on Hulu. He also lends his voice to the character of Sahil on Disney’s MIRA, ROYAL DETECTIVE, currently in season 2.
